There’s a rather strange story behind this piece…

Years ago, I thought it Would be fun to end the night by participating in a ghost hunt at a Halloween event held at a heritage railway station. We were given all manner of strange equipment and told a handful of stories of spirits roaming the platforms. The small group split up, only a few metres from each other circling a bench. The guide started to tell a story of a young evacuee boy named “Thomas” who’d supposedly been spotted around the bench. I walked over, sat on the bench an felt a strange, almost comforting atmosphere. Joking (but I think secretly not,) I asked if Thomas was there. Expecting nothing of it, I carried on listening to the guide when only a second later, my “ghost detecting K2 EMF metre” (yes… I did have to Google that. It’s a sort of simple thing with coloured lights ranging from green to red that beeps and flashes when it detects electromagnetic energy. Something like that anyway) started to go a bit bonkers setting off an alarm and flashing red which apparently, meant there were some ghostly goings on very close by. 

It all sounds a bit crazy, believe me I know but there was a very strange presence around that bench… not a scary one, a kind one. Anyway, whenever I visit that station, even years later, I always make sure I say a quick hello to Thomas on his bench, hence why I designed this art piece. The moral is, always be kind…even to ghosts.
